And the track of the day is...Luna - Swedish Fish (off 2002's Romantica)
There's nothing better than some dreamy indie pop to kick off a week, particularly when there's a steady whirling wind about and gray skies, again, to boot. Plus, when it means there are lyrics about apricots and blackberry pies and all those delicious treats, you can't help but be a twee more optimistic.
Enter Luna, an indie dream pop band who rose to prominence in the early 90s, with a whole host of excellent records. Luna, comprised of former members of Galaxie 500, The Feelies, and The Chills, formed circa 1991, but went through many an incarnation as the decades wore on, with the final line-up including Britta Phillips on bass. If you know little of Britta, all you need know is that she was the former voice for the animated great, Jem. Yes, I said Jem.
Luna would record up about 8 studio records and a handful of EPs in the more than a decade they played tunes, with a few live compilations and best ofs thrown about in there. They officially pulled the plug on their amps in 2005, with a final gig in New York's Bowery Ballroom sometime in the winter of that year.
One of my favorite Luna tunes is the track of the day, "Swedish Fish", and it actually came off one of their last studio records, 2002's Romantica. And it's just that. Sweet and romantic and makes you actually desire to listen to it on repeat while eating a bag of the delectible candies as well. But it's actually quite melodic and complex, too.
And it's the perfect way to get your week started.
So enjoy some dream.
